SERVING OTHERS IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF BEING A CHRISTIAN
All Followers Of Jesus Should Be Looking To Serve Other People!
Say: Welcome to Connect Week! We are excited to talk about how to connect to our churches, connect to the Lord and connect with our friends here at First Priority! Who got a chance to go to church this week? …. Awesome!
Icebreaker* (Musical Flip Flops)(10mins)
Say: Today we are going to play Musical Flip Flops! Everyone needs to take their shoes off and sit on the floor in a circle!
Use a large pair of flip flops (to ensure they will fit on all of the feet). Get music ready.
Say: Ok, when the music plays we will pass the flip flops around the circle. When you get the flip flops put them on and then quickly remove them and hand them off to the next person. When the music stops the player who is wearing the flip flops is out! We will keep playing until there is only one “flip flopper” left!
Play a few rounds if time permits.
Connect To God (7mins)
Say: Jesus made it very clear to His disciples that serving other people would be an essential part of their lives. He did it in a pretty radical way. He washed their feet! We have to understand that in Jesus’s time everybody walked everywhere, and showers were not easy to find. The result was the everyone’s feet were pretty nasty…however look what Jesus does:
“Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end… So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.” – John 13:1,4-5
Jesus came to serve others. Ultimately He would serve all mankind by dying on the cross to take the punishment we deserve on Himself. Because Jesus served us in humility and love, we ought to desire to serve others. Make no mistake, Jesus doesn’t love us any more or any less because of anything we do, but because of His great love for us, we should desire to serve others. That service shows others Christ in a tangible way.
The key is to find a way to serve the Lord and others with what we have. We might think if we had a million dollars we would help people. But we shouldn’t be thinking about how we would serve if things were different, we should be looking for ways we can serve now. All of us have gifts, talents, and skills we can offer to others. All of us can leave a situation better than we approached it. We can pick up trash in our neighborhood. We can have a friendly conversation with someone to brighten their day. We can stop and pray for others, in addition to sharing the Good News of the Gospel with them! We can serve at church, we can volunteer in our communities!
Jesus tells us that when we serve others, He accepts it as if we were serving Him!
“I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!” – Matthew 25:40
That is some amazing motivation to serve others! When we do we are actually serving Jesus!
Say: Why is it so important to serve others the way Jesus served us?
