Welcome (2mins)

Say: Welcome to Connect Week! We are excited to talk about how to connect to our churches, connect to the Lord and connect with our friends here at First Priority! Who got a chance to go to church this week? …. Awesome!

Icebreaker* (Honey, do you love me?) (10mins)

Say: Ok let’s get in a circle. I need a volunteer to be our first player!

Form a circle with one player in the middle, if it’s a large group there can be multiple circles.

Say: Ok, now the person who is our volunteer will go around to members of the circle and say to them “Honey, do you love me?” The person being questioned must answer, “Honey, I love you, but I just can’t smile.” If the person being questioned smiles or laughs, they becomes “it” and the previous “it” joins the circle. The person who is “it” is not allowed to touch other players, but may make as many funny faces as they wish.

Play a few rounds if time allows.

Connect To God (7mins)

Say: The Bible is very clear that there is a very specific characteristic that we can look for in Christians to determine if they are truly followers of Jesus. In fact, this characteristic will be so obvious in the lives of Christians, that it will be what they are known for! This characteristic? Love. Jesus said this:

“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” – John 13:34-35

Love should be the hallmark characteristic of those who follow Jesus Christ. Love for people who are different than us, love for those who follow Jesus, and for those who don’t. Loving one another is not just a suggestion, it’s actually a command that we have been given, directly from Jesus! When we follow this command it not only improves the quality of life for those around us, but it actually helps us to view the world around us through the perspective of Jesus! The Bible declares that God is love! In fact, we are only able to love because God showed us what it looks like to love!

“We love each other because he loved us first.” – 1 John 4:19

So because of Jesus great love for us, we ought to love people with great love as well! This means encouraging and loving our fellow Christians, to point them to Jesus and show them grace even if they are difficult to love. When it comes to our non-Christian friends, family and neighbors the most loving thing we can do in their life is introducing them to Jesus! Jesus loves them with a great love, the same way He loves us, and knowing this can radically change other’s lives! People who follow Jesus love everybody in the same way Jesus loved us!

One of Jesus’s apostles, John, who wrote one of the biographies of Jesus found in the Bible, as well as three letters and the Book of Revelation became one of the main leaders in the early church. It is said that towards the end of his life, he would deliver very short sermons. The church would invite this great man of God who had been with Jesus to speak to them, and John would get up and simply say this “Love one another” and then go sit down! Imagine that being the whole sermon at your church next Sunday! John’s point was that loving others was so important we should be focusing on it in our everyday lives!

Give a moment for new believers to share if they are willing

Encourage the student to explain why being connected to a local church is such a big part of their life.
