WHY SHOULD WE SHARE OUR FAITH?
Jesus Has Called Us To Invite Our Friends To “Come And See” Him!
Say: Welcome to our first Equip Week of the year! We are so excited to come together each Equip Week to study how to share the Gospel with our friends here at school! Today we will get to know each other a little bit, and talk about why it is so important to have this First Priority Club on campus!
Introduce the student leaders, campus coach and teacher sponsor.
Time permitting: Go around the room having each student share their name, what church they attended (if any), and their favorite type of candy.
Break the students into teams of any number. Their job will be to discuss the scenario you are presenting and create a solution together. The team with the best solution will win a prize!
Say: Does anyone like to watch apocalyptic/end of the world tv shows and movies like The Walking Dead or Maze Runner? What are some of your favorites?
Let students share a few of their favorites
Say: Imagine the world has undergone a zombie apocalypse. Whatever the disaster, a cure has been found that can save the world. You as a team have been placed in charge of spreading this amazing cure to each and every human left on the planet. What would be the best way to spread the cure throughout the world as quickly as possible? What obstacles could stand in your way of spreading the cure? Would it be difficult to do?
Give students a minute to discuss and share some ideas of how to spread the cure.
Say: Just like a zombie apocalypse that has spread throughout the whole world the Bible tells us that sin, which is a life-threating issue, has spread throughout the whole world!
“When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.” – Romans 5:12
What we are going to be talking about today is how to spread the cure of the GOSPEL to the people around us before it’s too late!
Say: Have you ever had a bad experience with something that made you never want to try it again? Maybe a restaurant or shopping experience? Maybe even a type of food or a hotel stay?
Let students share a couple bad experiences
Say: Often the reason that Christians don’t share their relationship with Jesus with others is because they have had a bad experience. It is pretty common for us to have run into an issue at school or with friends where we shared something about our faith that was rejected by others, or maybe even mocked and ridiculed. This leads us to just avoid the subject of faith or try to avoid people who might disagree with us.
However, the reason that we stop sharing with our friends about Jesus is often because we misunderstand what the goal of sharing with others really is! We are not called to convert people to our way of thinking. We are not responsible to make people believe the Bible, or that Jesus is who He says He is and can do what He says He can do. What we are called to do is simply this….invite others to come and see Jesus. To simply come and meet Him and make those decisions about faith for themselves. Jesus has called us to invite our friends to “come and see” Him!
We see a great example of this idea in the story of Levi the tax collector. Levi was not a very well liked man, nobody likes to pay taxes! Tax collectors were known to be criminals who would charge people more than they owed and keep the extra for themselves. In Luke’s biography of Jesus we see the story of Levi being called to faith in Jesus and what his response was.
“Later, as Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him. Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them.” – Luke 5:27-29
Levi simply asked his friends who didn’t know Jesus to come and meet Jesus at his house! That’s what we want to do here at First Priority! We want to invite our friends to come and see Jesus! This is because we know that Jesus is the cure that can heal our friends’ brokenness and sin. We want them to come and hear about Jesus so that they have an opportunity to accept the cure of the GOSPEL and experience the same relationship that we have with Jesus! We want to share 3Crowns with them so that they can understand the Gospel!
But our responsibility is not to “make them” believe in Jesus…it’s just to give them an opportunity to hear about Him. So don’t let a bad experience in sharing your faith ruin your friend’s experience of hearing the life-changing message of the GOSPEL for the first time! We should keep asking them, keep inviting them to Proclaim Week and to church because we know that if they meet Jesus it WILL change their life and their eternal destination forever! So remember Jesus has called us to invite our friends to “come and see” Him!
Say: Can anyone share about a time they shared the Gospel and what happened either positive or negative?
Allow students to answer
Say: If you share the Gospel with a friend and they don’t listen, what will happen to your friendship?
Allow students to answer
In-Prayer Time (5mins)
Handout the prayer cards and have the student list five names of school friends that they know are not Christians.
Say: Fill out these cards with the names of five friends who you know don’t know Jesus. If you talk to God about your friends, you are more likely to talk to your friends about God. We are going to spend a few minutes praying for these friends that they would come to Proclaim Week to hear the GOSPEL and that the Lord would work on their hearts and reveal Himself to them!
Take a couple minutes to allow the students to pray for their friends.
Planning Time (8mins)
Say: If we fail to plan than we plan to fail! What are some things we can do to make next week’s Proclaim Week the most effective it can be! Remember we want to invite our friends to “come and see” Jesus!
Let students share a few ideas.
Say: It is important to invite our friends to come out next week to hear the GOSPEL! We will have a party with food and games for them to enjoy. During the party –SPEAKERS NAME- will share the GOSPEL in a clear way and give your friends the opportunity to make a decision to follow Jesus!
We want to get some volunteers to help out over the next few weeks with Proclaim, Connect and Equip weeks! Who is willing to help?
Fill out the three-week planner with your student leaders and volunteers
Prepare the students for next week’s Proclaim Week. Make sure there are posters up and an announcement submitted to be made over the pa/tv or however announcements are communicated at your school. (The teacher sponsor can help with this).
Display announcement slides
Say: We have lots of different church options if you don’t have a home church check out the ones here on the screen. If you don’t see your church listed let me know. We will see you next week at Equip Week! We are excited to have you join us as we discuss the question of “What is Truth?” Be sure to be there… and feel free to invite some friends!
