On February 14 a mass shooting occurred at one of our very own South Florida high schools, Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland. Seventeen people were killed and 15 more taken to hospitals. This attack was the deadliest shooting to take place at an American secondary school, surpassing the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in which 15 people died. I’m Not Ashamed is a 2016 biographical drama film based on the journals of the first victim of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, Rachel Scott. Rachel wrote in her journal, “I’ve always been drawn to hands. I think it’s because it’s the way we touch people… If one person could go out of their way to show compassion, it could start a chain reaction.”
Growing up, Rachel knew the love of God, but she wasn’t always ready to receive it. At times her faith was on fire … and at other times it was at odds with her everyday life. As she wrote in her journal: “I don’t understand why having a walk with God is so hard for me. I’m so weak. At school, with friends, at work.” Having reached a breaking point when her relationship with a non-believing boyfriend ended, Rachel found inspiration from her “big brother”—a former homeless teen she helped lead to Christ. After praying, “Father, use my life to touch the world and let your light shine through me,” her renewed commitment to Jesus played out compassionately and powerfully at her high school … and around the world.
Campus Club Resources
Below are four weeks of Campus Club Resources, based on the movie I Am Not Ashamed, which we pray will play a small role in bringing healing and hope to the First Priority Club’s of South Florida and beyond. It is totally optional, but you may consider setting aside time to watch the full movie as a Club prior to going through the resources below. You can rent it through many digital rental services or purchase the DVD online (buy DVD). It is roughly 2 hours long, so one suggestion is to watch it during two consecutive club meetings and then moving to the four-weeks of clips that coincide with the printable Club Lessons below. Faculty Sponsors and Campus Coaches, please use your discretion showing the movie to those who have had friends recently die, as it may be too intense or too soon for some students to watch.
